Slumdog Millionaire
This movie portrays poverty in India today. It not only showed the extent of the poverty in the country but the extent of the rich. There seems to be extremes, not a lot of middle class people. In the story, a group of three children from the slums were taken by a child trafficker. The story follows the children throughout their lives. The worldview for this movie is related to working hard and never trusting others for anything. After working hard, one may never get anything back in return. Your home or "turf" should always be protected, no matter who or what you have to go against to protect it.
I agree with this worldview. The world is a bad place and having too high of expectations or trust for anyone could put you in great pain. Depending on only God and yourself to accomplish great things will never let you down.
Are you saying you can never reach out and trust other people? What about marriage? Or friendships? It just seems so cynical and harsh to be such a recluse. I'd rather have faith in human beings.
ReplyDeleteI think that God can give you people to help you with your problems, yes I think that anything is possible with God, but I think that you can use other people to help you through situations. I thnk that keeping yourself aware of the world and the bad things around you is important, and that you need to keep yourself slightly sheltered but not entirely, otherwise you may not be able to experience the world in a way that allows you to help it.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure I agree that nobody can be trusted, however I would concede that a great many people tend to act out of self-interest in most situations, which can easily lead to circumstances that lead one to be hurt by people who had been previously viewed as trustworthy. The film exposes these situations quite well to make its point, especially in a country experiencing the unparalleled growth of India: A sort of Wild West atmosphere where people like Jamal get swept under the rug by more aggressive types such as Maman and Salim.
ReplyDeleteI agree in a way that if it's you and God then the chances of being let down are much lower but I believe that there are many people out there that you can trust, no matter how dangerous our world may be. We do have it much better here in the US compared to a scene like in this movie but i think that once you do find the people who you can really trust they can take you places you've never seen before and they give you a different pair of eyes to see the world and the way you see each other is completely different from everyone else.
